No one wants to fall! But falls are a huge problem, affecting 1 in 4 adults over the age of 65. Falls are the primary cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries in older adults. Falls can lead to physical decline, depression, social isolation, decreased quality of life, and even, death.
These falls occur in healthcare settings, such as hospitals, rehab facilities or nursing homes. Older adults are top of mind for being high fall risks, but other categories of patients can fall too. Industrial, or workplace, falls are their truly own category and need special attention. Often, workers are encouraged to go to a clinic rather than seeking emergency care. This can be due to financial incentives or to keep the company from losing a track record of "no injuries" or "no recordable incidents." Emergency Care often merits reporting the fall to OSHA. Did you client feel pressured to go to a clinic instead of the Emergency Department?
This type of fall occurs when a person falls, slips or trips due to a hazardous condition on someone else's property. Some examples include: wet floors, uneven surfaces, poor lighting, or buckled floors. Some important items to evaluate are: type of footwear worn, video or camera footage of the scene, signs present. such as "wet floor" signs, previous complaints or reports, and EMS or first responder records.
